Currently, the prestige and positive aspects of laser eye surgery have been widely publicized. This form of surgical treatment is basically performed to correct vision problems. In general, this irreversible surgery will enable the patients to restore normal vision during the remaining of the life. This is the most significant benefit of laser eye surgery. In fact, it is wise for every patient to be well-informed about the whole procedure. Both those benefits and risks should be taken into account. It is commonly known that laser eye surgery has limitations and possible complications. To some extent, the pros and cons drive some patients into a dilemma. Leaving the defective eyes untreated, it may lead to visual loss as they age. In contrast, receiving a laser eye surgery is coupled with potential risks.

The retina in the eye is a layer of cells that senses light. Laser eye surgery is actually aimed to reshape the cornea, so as to make the light entering the eye focus directly on the retina. In detail, the surgeon will cut a corneal flap and under it some corneal tissues will be removed in order to change its curvature. In general, lifting and putting back the flap is inconvenient, albeit uncomfortable. One of the possible complications after the surgery is flap dislocation. It is lucky that this condition can usually be avoided through enough sleep. There are some other negative conditions postoperatively such as under-corrected or over-corrected. Side effects such as eye infection or irritation occur even more frequently.

It is a necessity to have a check with the surgeon whether you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery. A responsible surgeon will explain all those potential risks and complications extensively associated with the surgery. In addition, the surgeon who will conduct the surgery is always determinative to the success of the procedure. So, it is imperative for patients to be educated and informed of the surgeon’s skills and experience.

Laser eye surgery is advantageous for its safe and effective correction on eyesight. However, any operation exist dangerous factors, though the advantage outweighs the disadvantage in the eye surgery. It is better to understand the potential risks and the corresponding method to deal with them.

Risks during the surgery

As everyone owns particular flap, so it is difficult to creating the flap, which is accomplished with the help of microkertome. Though the possibility of the unsuccessful rate is only lower than 1%, you cannot ignore the risks. As the flap creating is the first procedure in the surgery, any tiny problem will prevent the surgery going successfully in the following. If the flap is created badly, the surgery has to be stopped immediately and wait until four months’ time. In the following four months, your cornea can heal well. If the healing process does not go smoothly, your eyesight may experience decreased vision sharpness.

Risks after the surgery

The flap created during the surgery may shift slightly after the surgery, which may be caused by the bumping or the rubbing on the eyes, so all the above actions are avoidable, especially during the first twenty-four hours. Twenty-four hours later, the risks fall greatly. It is reported that the unsuccessful rate is lower than 0.5% within the first month after the surgery. However, there is accident that eye injury takes place after one month or one year later. In that case, a reposition of the flap is needed.

Infections after the surgery is the most troublesome risk, though there is only 1 out of 5000 in the LASIK surgery and 1 out of 1000 in the PPK one. But keep in mind that the most serious infection will cause permanent impairment to the cornea, thus leading to declined vision. The antibacterial drops, provided by the physician, may greatly reduce the risks of infection.

Diffuse Lamella Keratitis (DLK), one type of inflammation after the surgery, is reckoned to be 1 in every 100 cases and the serious one is 1 in every 1500 cases. Steroid drops are the best method to deal with DLK without doing any harm to your vision. If you happen to get into DLK, your flap may need to be raised to decrease the inflammation.

Eyes always feel dry in the first one week or two after the surgery as the laser which used to rectify the eye vision will disturb the wetting of the eye surface. Sometimes, the dry eyes may last for one year and it is advised to use the lubricating drops frequently to keep the eyes wet.

Halo is the most common side effect after the surgery, the symptom of the complication is that you see a halo around bright lights in the darkness. For most people, the symptom will disappear gradually. However, if the symptom goes for a long time, it is better to go to the surgeon to have an eye check.

Gentle hazy vision happens especially during the first few weeks after the surgery and it is a very common symptom without any risks. While if the haze is very serious, of which the possibility is less than 1%, you may have to do another treatment to repair it. The fact is PPK patients require a further prescription treatment than LASIK.

Epithelium is the tissue that covers the external surface of the cornea. The case is only about 0.2% that the epithelium will grow under the corneal flap after the surgery, and the symptom always exists in the enhancement surgery rather than the initial eye surgery, and the rate is as high as 6%.

About less than 1% of patients will lose their vision sharpness after the surgery which indicates that they come into the condition that your eyesight is over-corrected or under-corrected. If your eyes are over-corrected your eye problem will fall into the opposite way, which means the nearsightedness may become the farsightedness. However, if your eyes are under-corrected, which means your vision problem is not dealt with thoroughly, you may need to do an improvement surgery to correct the remaining prescription, but the surgery must be carried out one month later after the LASIK type surgery and four months after the PKK type surgery.

As we know, good eye care after laser eye surgery plays an important role in achieving better treating result for patients. But a lot of people do not have clear idea on how to make a good eye care after the surgery, the following will list out some general tips which can be applied for general situations but may not applied for all situations as the surgery varies based on individual needs and techniques used.

First, after the laser eye surgery, patients are required to use antibiotic eye medication and lubricating eye drops in the next days. And for some patients, they may need to wear a protective eye patch. Therefore, please make sure to do according to your eye doctor’s instructions.

Second, patients should avoid touching or rubbing eyes after laser eye surgery, or else, it may cause eye infection. And it is better to keep our eyes rest as much time as possible while taking the medication prescribed by the surgeon.

Third, the after-operation test is also important. It is common and good to exam our eyes the day after the surgery. And then, patients should have their eyes tested at the following intervals: one week, three weeks, 3 month, 6 month, nine moth and 1 year later in order to check if everything is in good order. It is common case that patients will feel their vision fluctuated and blurred around six month after the surgery, which is because the eye heals.

Fourth, patients are eager to know if and when they can do some activities. The following will give some introduction on this based on regular situations: For housework, driving and shopping, patients can do them within 3 to 4 days after laser eye surgery. If patients want to take part in some sports, such as running, cycling aerobics and so on, they can take them normally within 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery, but it is advised to take some eye protection on their eyes. And for sports like boxing or football, which need hard physical contact, it is recommended to take these activities for not less than 3 month after the laser eye surgery.

Last but not least, it is an important principle to follow your surgeon’s laser eye surgery aftercare program, which can help patients to achieve better treating result. And if you have any question or discomforts, visit and consult in your eye doctor immediately for help.

There are good reasons that laser eye surgery has been widely accepted. Most people with refractive errors have to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. Either kind of eyewear would bother certain group of wearers. As a result, most people experience a new feeling after a laser eye surgery. Various types of laser eye surgeries are performed every day and the market is still on the rise.

It has grown to a worldwide phenomenon that more and more people are considering laser eye surgeries. Nowadays, Lasik and PRK are two major types among all laser eye procedures. Both of the two use a laser treatment to reshape the cornea, while preserving respective difference.

Lasik procedure cuts a flap on the surface of the eye and removes the top layer of the cornea. PRK also involves corneal tissue removal. It uses a laser to etch off the upper layer of the cornea. A difference lies in that PRK uses chemicals to take away a thin layer of the cornea, which facilitates the corneal reshape. PRK does not cut a cornea flap.

Lasik and PRK also have difference in the healing process. The healing time for PRK is typically 5 to 6 six days, while Lasik only takes 2 days. It is important to keep in mind that the bandage can not be taken off until the healing process is over. Some patients are even required to keep the bandage for extra days because their eyes are extremely sensitive to light.

A surgeon of Lasik will first apply anesthetic to the patient using a dropper. After that, he will cut a thin flap on the cornea and then pull back the flap for further steps. The cornea will then be shaved using a laser, so that the cornea will properly focus the light after the surgery. Usually the laser uses blue light pulses for corneal reshape. Because all the common vision problems result from irregular corneal shape, Lasik can fix them effectively. Lasik curable problems include astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Patients should always consult a specialist to get advice on which type of laser eye surgery they should choose. Enough preparation and research are needed.

Laser eye surgery is one of the most valuable medical developments of our lifetime. It eliminates the need for glasses and contacts. However, few knows that laser eye surgery has a long history, which can be traced back to the 1890s when the basic principles of keratotomy (corneal incisions) to correct refractive error were explained and in the early 1930s, a Japanese doctor did some pioneering work with corneal incisions, but the work was not very successful so that many patients experienced from corneal decompensation later on in life.

Meeting with so many difficulties, researches never give up. They continue to research the potential medical procedure. Finally, with techniques and understanding of laser eye surgery improved in the later decades, a Russian eye surgeon Dr Fyodorov in the early 1970s successfully used the technique of radial keratotomy. Shaving off the front layer of the eye, he improved the vision of a boy who was involved in an accident with his eye severely damaged. Since then, he caught the attention of ophthalmic surgeons worldwide.

However, eye surgery did not widely spread then even after Dr Fyodorov had published the incident and many papered concerned. It didn’t become a common procedure until two American scientists went to Russia to find out more about the discovery and turned the eye surgery dream into a reality. Since then the eye surgery is considered a medical procedure which drawn up more and more attention. The first pioneering surgery was performed in 1989 in Greece.

Tools used at the very beginning were coarse, making the procedure both dangerous and inaccurate. It was the introduction of laser technologies that increases the success rate of eye surgery. Because of the delicate nature of an eye, the operation needs to be performed with great care and delicate tools. The technology and development of laser eye surgery makes eye surgeries widely spread around the globe.

Up to now, laser eye surgery has been performed for nearly two decades. Today the surgery bears a 95% success rate with more people enjoying full 20/20 vision and most patients having undergone such a surgery report little discomfort, which boasts more and more people to have a try because of the high safety and success rates.

With laser eye surgeries, quality of people’s lives is greatly enhanced and evaluated. The good news is that there are more and more professional laser eye surgeon are trained which further guarantees the great popularity of laser eye surgery all over the world.

Eyes are the most sensitive organs of your body, and you need to pay more attention to protect them especially after they have received incisions from laser eye surgery. It is a long-term healing process just like other kinds of serious medical procedures which requires proper medical care, and otherwise it will lead to complications which may end up with another eye surgery. In order to avoid side effects and get the maximum benefits from laser eye surgery, you should do the following things.

First you should contact with your eye surgeon. Before the laser eye surgery, your eye surgeon may probably have made a plan of the post surgery care. You should take care of your eyes as your surgeon has advised you to do or not to do in order to protect your eyes during its healing process which may last for a month. And after laser eye surgery, you should keep in touch with your eye surgeon whenever you feel pain or inconvenience and remember to visit your eye surgeon in time to check the healing status and ensure that it is recovering properly. Your surgeon will give you new advises on how to avoid eye infection according to your updated eye condition.

Second you should keep your eyes closed as long as possible for the first 48 hours after the surgery. Because a beam of light may requires the movement and adjustment of the cornea, and the movement may open up the wound of the cornea again. So you should keep your eyes closed and your eyeballs motionless as long as possible, even if it is very inconvenient unless the situation that you must to open your eyes. The first 48 hours is a period of extreme importance that may influence the next healing process.

Try to wear eye protection if possible. Sunlight, wind, or a habit of rubbing eyes can lead to reopen the wound. You should wear eye protection to protect your eyes, for example you should wear one or two eye mask when you sleep, and wear a pair of best-fit goggles when you take a bath. Avoid doing makeup of your whole face especially eye related ones. Avoid going outdoors, and wear sunglasses to prevent ultraviolet rays if you have to go out.

Your eye doctor knows best in how to make post surgery care for your eyes to ensure the recovery of your eyes after laser eye surgery. You should take the medication and use eye drops that are prescribed by your eye doctor religiously according to your doctor’s orders. If the prescribed medicine doesn’t work, you should contact your eye doctor immediately to see if the medicine should be changed.

Laser eye surgery is a popular choice for correcting eye problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Most of the patient who undergo laser eye surgery can improve their vision, and more than half of them bring their vision back to the level of 20/20 vision. With the development of laser eye surgery, the precise of this procedure increased greatly.

The most advanced technology of laser eye surgery is LASIK Plus, which is all known as wavefront LASIK eye surgery. LASIK Plus uses a kind of new equipment called wavefront 3D mapping system which is first used by NASA to eliminate aberrations of the telescopes lenses. The correction procedure for human eyes lenses is very similar to telescopes lenses. So wavefront mapping system is introduced as guiding system of laser eye surgery process.

The wavefront mapping system can detect the higher aberrations of your eyes curvature which usually can’t be corrected by traditional laser eye surgery. The mapping system transmits waves of light onto the eye cornea so that the computer can calculate the exactly part that need to be cut. By using LASIK Plus system, most of the patients can see much better after they undergo the eye surgery.

Since the equipment of this LASIK Plus system is much more expensive than conventional machines, the cost of LASIK Plus eye surgery is also expensive than traditional eye surgeries. However, many surgeons like to recommend Wavefront Plus eye surgery because the eyes are so important to every individual that any risk is not acceptable. And wavefront system allows the eye surgeons to provide a fast, painless and effective care for the patients who are considering undergoing laser eye surgery to improve their vision.

More and more patients also choose LASIK Plus eye surgery to correct their vision problems. It is very attractive that there will be fewer risks if wavefront system is used. And if the price of LASIK Plus eye surgery can drop in the near future, there will be more people get more benefits from it.

Laser eye surgery is widely used nowadays to solve eye problems, such as correcting vision. The use of lasers in the field of ophthalmology with the guidance of computer really increased the accuracy of the surgery. However, laser eye surgery is not the ultimate solution and like other surgery there are risks to have different kinds of side effect after the laser eye surgery.

If you are one of the patients who are going to undergo laser eye surgery, it is necessary for you to know the risks that related to laser eye surgery. Following are three kinds of the risks that may happen due to the laser eye surgery.

The most serious risk that may occur to the patients who undergo laser eye surgery is the complete loss of vision. Although the possibility of being totally blind is very small, it does happen. What is even worse is that loss of vision caused by laser eye surgery is permanent and even can’t be solved by another session of laser eye surgery. You may have never heard this before from eye clinics but it is true. So if you decide to undergo eye laser surgery, you’d better choose a well known eye doctor to perform the surgery.

The most commonly happened side effect of laser eye surgery is dry eyes. Although not a serious problem, patient with dry eyes may feel constant irritation or even pain in his eyes. Dry eyes can lead to a slight discoloration of the iris of eyes. In this condition, eye drops are usually recommended to keep eyes moisture.

Many patients also suffer oversensitivity to light after the laser eye surgery. They find themselves difficult in seeing things even if the light is normal or faint. And it is dangerous to drive a car if patients are experiencing light sensitivity.

I believe most people who have to wear glasses or contacts wish how perfect it will be if they have good eyesight or don’t need to wear glasses. Nowadays, with the rapid development of eye technology, this dream can come true. For certain kinds of vision problems, they can be cured completely by laser eye surgery now. Due to no pain and high rate of success, the laser eye surgery is very popular with people with certain vision problems. Just a minor operation, your life will take great changes!
There are two types of laser eye surgery – Lasik and Lasek. Their differences are as following: First, they are classified by depending on the thickness of the cornea. For the flat and thin cornea, Lasek will be a better choice, on the contrary, Lasik will be preferred. Second, they are different also due to the different strength in the lasers used, which leads to different amount of tissue per pulse by the laser. It is a typical number of 0.25 microns of tissue per pulse.
For the laser eye surgery taker, please keep in mind it is critical that the laser should be controlled by a controller with the latest eye-tracking technology. Before taking the surgery, it is no need to worry if you should give up your drinking or change your eating pattern. That is because the operation uses anesthetic drops to numb the eyes for the yet to come operation. It is just a minor operation, which takes less than 30 minutes, however, the changes it brings to you will be great. But one point we should never forget that driving after a laser eye surgery is not allowed.
Maybe now you are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, which costs you some amount of time to care for them; maybe you are getting annoyed with your deteriorating eyesight and higher prescription glasses, or you are distressed that you love some sports, but because the eye sight problem, you are not allowed to take part in, now it is really a blessing that the laser eye surgery will help you to get rid of these worries and troubles. The thing you need to do is to visit your doctor and talk with him to see if your vision problems can be treated with laser eye surgery. If your eyes are lucky and suitable for this surgery, then congratulations! You no longer need to wear glasses or contacts.
